- 階段（かいだん）は、高低差のある場所への移動を行うための構造物である。人間の足で昇降可能な高さ（蹴上げ）をもつ、いくつもの水平な段（踏みづら）に分割されている。日本語の古語および雅語では、きざはし（階）と言う。
- 階段には直線、円形、および、直線が多数の部分に折れ曲がった形などがある。大きく折れ曲がった形では、その部分に特に広い段が出来、これを踊り場という。上から見ると円形になっており、中心を回転しながら上昇・下降する構造の階段は螺旋階段（らせん かいだん）と呼ばれる。
- 材質が石の場合、石段（いしだん）と呼ばれる。英語では建築上の階段はStairs、道路上の階段はStepsと言い分けられているが日本語ではこの区別はない。
