日共和国ウ共和制

共和制（きょうわせい、英: republic）は、人民または人民の大部分が統治上の最高決定権を持つ政体。一般には、政府の大半の意思決定が元首の裁量によってではなく、成立した法を参照して行われる体制のこと。
「共和制」（リパブリック）の語源はラテン語の「res publica」で、「公共の事」との意味を持ち、更には「公共の政府を持つ国家」の意味で使用された。
日本では通常、「リパブリック」を制度の場合は「共和制」、特に政体の場合は「共和政」、国家の場合は「共和国」と訳している。また思想の場合は「共和主義」である。それぞれの対比語は、君主制、君主政、君主国、君主主義である。
