日女性 ウメス (動物)
- メス(雌、牝 英: Female)は、オスと対比される動物の性別。主に人間以外の動物を指す際に使われ、人間の女性に相当する。動物の中で、子供や卵を産む方を言う。記号として、手鏡をかたどったギリシャ文字「♀」が使われる。
- メスは、基本的には卵を産む側の性である。派生的に、受精卵を体内で孵化させ、子供を産む場合もある。いずれにせよ、卵は精子に比べ、格段に大きく、数が少ない。これは、受精卵の発生に使われる栄養が、すべて卵の側から供給されるためである。
