- 随筆(ずいひつ)とは、文学における一形式で、筆者の体験や読書などから得た知識をもとに、それに対する感想・思索・思想をまとめた散文である。随想(ずいそう)、エッセイ、エッセー(仏: essai, 英: essay)等ともいう。
- ミシェル・ド・モンテーニュの『エセー』(1580年)がこのジャンルの先駆者であり、欧米においては綿密な思索を基にした論文的なスタイルを念頭に置いてこの語を用いることが多いが、日本においては後述する江戸時代後期の日記的随筆のイメージもあって、
