- 木綿・木棉(もめん)は、ワタの種子から取れる繊維。コットン(英語 cotton)。ワタ自体のことを木綿と呼ぶこともあるが、ここでは繊維としての木綿について述べる。
- ワタとはアオイ科ワタ属の多年草の総称で、木綿は種子の周りに付いている。繊維としては伸びにくく丈夫であり、吸湿性があって肌触りもよい。このため、現代では下着などによく使われるが、縮みやすいという欠点もある。主成分はセルロース。
- 単に棉・綿(めん)とも言う。摘み取った状態までのものが棉、種子を取り除いた後の状態のものが綿だが、区別しないことも多い。
- ただし、「綿」と書いて「わた」と読むのは、本来は塊状の繊維全般を指す語である。布団や座布団の中身を繊維の種類を問わず「綿(わた)」と呼ぶが、これはその本来の用法である。古くは、中でも真綿(絹の原料)を意味することが多かった。
