- 子供(こども)とは次のような意味で使われている言葉である。
- 自分がもうけた子。親がもうけた子。親と一対になる子。親に対する子。
- 幼い者。年齢のいかない者。(児童、小児)
- 考え方によっては、胎児も出生前発育をしている生命として子供に含める場合もある。
- また、親子や権威を持つ人物との相対的関係を表したり、氏族・民族または宗教内での関係を示す場合にも使われる。
- 思慮や行動などが幼く足りない者のことも指して使われる用語もあり、幼稚さや要領・主体性の無さを表す言葉として「子供っぽい」「子供らしい」「子供の使い」等の慣用句もある。
